FAQ

The Durban Exchange is a Shariah-compliant, impact-driven investment & crowdfunding platform that connects ethical investors with high-potential startups and sustainable projects. Our mission is to uplift communities, drive innovation, and create lasting change through ethical finance.

The Tawhid Impact Sukuk is a Shariah-compliant investment instrument managed by our alliance banking partners. It is structured as a partnership where investors and the Durban Exchange share profits and losses based on pre-agreed ratios. Funds are used to support high-impact ventures that align with Islamic principles.

  • The Tawhid Impact Sukuk is available exclusively to accredited investors, including: High-net-worth individuals
  • Family offices
  • Institutional investors
  • Sophisticated entities.

The offering is limited to accredited investors to comply with South African financial regulations.

All investments are screened and certified by a Shariah Supervisory Board to ensure compliance with Islamic principles. This includes avoiding haram industries (e.g., alcohol, gambling, interest-based finance) and prioritising ethical, socially responsible projects.

We use a robust impact measurement framework to track the social, environmental, and economic outcomes of our investments. Key metrics include:

  • Jobs created
  • Communities uplifted
  • Carbon emissions reduced
  • Access to essential services (e.g., healthcare, education, housing).

The Durban Exchange is a crowdfunding platform managed by the National Zakat Foundation, a registered non-profit organization. Our investment platform and the Tawhid Impact Sukuk are operated through Durban Companies Market, a private company, and managed by its alliance banking partners. This structure ensures full compliance with South African financial regulations, including the Financial Markets Act (FMA), 2012, and the Companies Act, 2008.

As a profit-and-loss sharing (PLS) instrument, investors share in both the profits and losses of the partnership. Losses are distributed proportionally based on capital contributions.

We provide startups with:

  • Access to ethical, Shariah-compliant capital.
  • Guidance from industry leaders and experts.
  • Operational support and access to our network.
  • Structured growth pathways to scale their ventures.
